12th International Eyes & Ears Awards

Cologne, 19.10.10 – Last Thursday, on 14 October 2010, Eyes & Ears of Europe celebrated the 33 prize winners of the International Eyes & Ears Awards. For the 12th time, Eyes & Ears of Europe, the European Branch Association for the Design, Promotion and Marketing of Audiovisual Media, awarded the distinction in the context of MEDIENTAGE MÜNCHEN. This year, the International Eyes & Ears Awards Show was restructured in order to allow for a more compact programme. In addition, the 12th International Eyes & Ears Awards were accompanied musically by the German pop band Samuel Harfst.

After having examined a total of 597 submissions from 24 countries, the different pre-juries of Eyes & Ears of Europe selected the finalists in the following fields: 'TV/Film/Media-Design', 'Audio Design & Composition', 'Interactive Design, Promotion & Branding' and 'Promotion/Advertising/Image'. In September 2010, the European Council for Design, Promotion and Marketing of Audiovisual Media selected in London the 33 winners of the 12th International Eyes & Ears Awards out of all finalists. "The broad participation shows the importance of the International Eyes & Ears Awards for the identification of audiovisual quality standards in the international media, communication and dialogue industry. The Eyes & Ears Awards Show featuring the prize winners and finalists is the most selective showcase for the quality and performance of the industry on international level. In the context of the International Eyes & Ears Awards, participants can watch the best productions in the fields of design, promotion and marketing of audiovisual media in a compact setting and personally exchange ideas personally with the creative", says Wout Nierhoff, CEO of Eyes & Ears of Europe.

This year, the 12th International Eyes & Ears Awards 2010 were presented in a new design package by CRAXX Medienproduktion. In addition, instead of all finalists, only the prize winners were shown in order to guarantee a more compact event. The finalists were presented in the form of an excellently produced shortlist trailer by producer Christian Machunsky of Bayerischer Rundfunk. "I am happy to see that the new programme run and the musical accompaniment by Samuel Harfst was warmly welcomed by the audience. With the new design package for the International Eyes & Ears Awards penned by audiovisual designer Frank Ziethen, the prize winners are presented in an aesthetically outstanding context", continues Nierhoff.

The special prize CREATION for excellent creative achievements was conferred twice this year: to Schweizer Fernsehen for their audiovisual design creations of recent years and to DW-TV for the audiovisual music documentation 'Das Beethoven-Projekt' with star conductor Paavo Järvi and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. "The creations of the design department of Schweizer Fernsehen appeal through imagery and staging that are produced in a high quality, cinematically convincing and emotional way. This is true of the entire productive output in recent years. Whether it’s lead-ins, station and format IDs or bumpers – Schweizer Fernsehen shows how TV design draws the viewer in, entertains and informs", says the jury judgement. The jury called the 'Beethoven-Projekt': "A film which communicates enthusiasm for classical music and gives insight into the inner life of an orchestra. This excellent audiovisual documentary focuses on the story of the 40 musicians of the German ‘Kammerphilharmonie Bremen’ and their Estonian-American star conductor Paavo Järvi. Using the Beethoven Cycle as an example, the film shows how the German ‘Kammerphilharmonie Bremen’ goes about its business. In addition, it showcases the special characteristics of this excellent orchestra. The film is worthy of this award because it was made at the very highest technical and aesthetic level – it is simultaneously informative, intelligent and entertaining. And the film design – from lead-in to the final credits – meets the highest esthetical benchmarks."
ProSiebenSat.1 TV Deutschland was happy to receive the special prize INNOVATION for their interactive promotion on the internet. "Whether it is 'Alizee', 'The Simpsons', 'Lipstick Jungle', 'Stromberg' or 'Flash Forward' – all these ProSieben series can be found on the World Wide Web. But the content is not simply transposed 1:1 to the Internet. Instead, surprising and innovative narrative and interaction forms are developed that address the user and encourage him to search for clues or simply participate in specific actions", says the jury statement.
The special prize EFFECTIVENESS went to RTL CREATION for its promotion campaigns. "Whether shows, series or films – in the course of recent years, RTL CREATION has shown how promotion campaigns can be realised effectively, coherently and in a target-group oriented way. The campaigns excel through distribution that is both comprehensive and multi-layered as well as through the pronounced clarity of message and aesthetics. With innovative ideas, striking images, witty texts and an excellent design, RTL CREATION adopts their campaigns for all distribution channels while perfectly integrating the RTL brand", says the jury.
The Eyes & Ears Excellence Award 2010 went to Swiss photographer Michel Comte: Julian Schnabel, Miles Davis, Jeremy Irons, Demi Moore, Mike Tyson, Michael Schuhmacher and Carla Bruni are amongst those Comte has photographed for Vogue, Vanity Fair and advertising campaigns. "Michel Comte possesses the great ability to respond to people in his personal manner. He succeeds in getting people to open up and reveal something personal. He is able to inspire them for his ideas and visions. Thus, Michel Comte helps create unique personal moments within the over staged world of fashion photography and allows us to witness them. More than fashion photos, he produces personal portraits. He creates iconic photography in which we glimpse stars and celebrities in never before seen and inimitable ways", says laudator Alex Hefter, Creative Director of Schweizer Fernsehen. This prize for outstanding and lasting contributions to the creation and examination of audiovisual communication was awarded for the 13th time. Last year, this prize for outstanding contributions to the design and examination of audiovisual communication was awarded to the internationally renowned Set and Production Designer Florian Wieder. Former laureates include Yello – Dieter Meier and Boris Blank Robert Wilson, Manfred Becker, Peter Weibel, Anton Corbijn, Peter Lamont, Hermann Vaske, Sky Du Mont, Martin Lambie-Nairn, Roman Kuhn and Oliviero Toscani.
Musical entertainment at the 12th International Eyes & Ears Awards was provided by the German pop band Samuel Harfst. The band members are singer, songwriter and guitarist Samuel Harfst, his brother David, who plays cajon and drums, pianist and bassist Dirk Menger and cellist Dominik Schweiger. The songs, sung in both English and German, have a warm, unobtrusive sound characterised by simplicity and clarity. Their lyrics appeal through a reserved, sentimental poetry. The recently released, new album by Samuel Harfst 'Alles Gute zum Alltag' is available in music stores at a price of 14.99 Euros.
The International Eyes & Ears Awards 2010 were especially supported by Bayerisches Fernsehen, CRAXX Medienproduktion, Brandsome, ORF, Red Bee Media, ARTE, BDA, Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, Avid, Bayerische Landeszentrale für neue Medien and the MEDIENTAGE MÜNCHEN.
