Book recommendation: 'Wendepunkte im Bauen: Von der seriellen zur digitalen Architektur'
23-07-2010

In 1959, Konrad Wachsmann, the architect of Albert Einstein's house in Caputh in Brandenburg, published the book 'Wendepunkte im Bauen'. It became the epochal manifest for the consequent industrialisation of building. Fifty years later, the Architekturmuseum of TU Munich, in conjunction with department chairs in supporting structure planning and architectural informatics, traces the effects and the meaning of this classic work. On the occasion of the exhibition 'Wendepunkte im Bauen: Von der seriellen zur digitalen Architektur', a catalogue of the same name has been published. Wachsmann believed that pre-construction of the various structural parts at the factory and installation on the building site should replace the usual construction operations. In the publication, texts and images explain the transformation of building into serial architecture: from Munich's crystal palace, the Tetrahedral Tower of Graham Alexander Bell and Konrad Wachsmann's aeroplane hangar, to Jean Prouvé's Maison Tropicale through to Renzo Piano's IBM Pavilion. Wachsmann, who emigrated to the USA in 1941 and created a prefabricated house system there with Walter Gropius, developed a construction system for great halls for the US aerospace industry. In the process, he created the basis for the forming of standard elements of industrially constructed, widely spanned room frameworks. After the Second World War, Wachsmann’s ideas had great influence on international architects, engineers and building enterprises. But due to a lack of aesthetical quality in the prefabricated houses, industrial building came under criticism. A new turning point only came with the advent of computer-controlled methods of layout and fabrication and the economic machine production of individually created forms. Since the 1990s, industrialisation, prefabrication and system building have gained a new, trend-setting importance. This is evident e.g. in the dome of British Museum, constructed by Foster + Partners, which exclusively features different parts and different joint connections. Current system buildings and digital fabrication methods are visualised in the publication and show both the possibilities and problems caused by the nearly arbitrary creation of forms. The 224-page documentation including 268 images was published by Architekturmuseum and is available there at a price of 39 Euros or online at http://www.cedon.de/Wendepunkte+im+Bauen.htm. In bookshops, the catalogue price is 49 Euros.
